Planetary alignment - 24/06/22

On the 24th June 2022, we got up at 3am and drove the short distance to the beach to witness the planetary alignment, when most of the planets would be visible in a line, above the horizon.

With the naked eye, we were lucky enough to see Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and we even focused in on Saturn and Jupiter through the telescope! The moon was even in line with the planets at one point.

This was one of the first times I have seen the planets through a telescope, and so I was astounded at the fact that we could see Jupiter's moons, as I have never seen them before. Although Jupiter has 80 moons, only four are visible to us through this type of telescope, but this is still a truly amazing sight to see. On this occasion, we could see three, as one was behind Jupiter.

As well as seeing Jupiter, we were also able to focus on Saturn, so Saturn’s rings were revealed to me for the first time! I was so shocked to see them as I never actually thought it was possible - and they looked so similar to the photos and images you draw and imagine as a child.

I really enjoyed seeing these amazing sights and I can’t wait to see what else we can find.

The photos featured here were not the best, as we originally were only going to view this phenomenon so we did not take the appropriate camera gear with us. Therefore, these photos were taken through a bird watching telescope, with a phone!
