What is Precession?

Precession is a change in the orientation of the rotational axis of a rotating body. The Earth wobbles on its rotational axis as it rotates, much like a spinning top toy that is slightly off centre.

The gravitational effects of the Sun and Moon cause the Earth to bulge at the equator and this affects tides which in turn affect Earth's rotation.

The Earth's axial precession occurs in a cycle of around 26,000 years.
